Superconducting Systems Inc. (SSI) has three areas of activity: a) design and manufacture of cryogen-free (liquid helium free) superconducting magnets for medical and research applications, b) research and development in superconducting magnet technology, and c) contract engineering services.
SSI has pioneered the development of cryogen-free superconducting magnets for pre-clinical MRI applications and for human MRI applications. SSI was first to produce:
- 1.5T preclinical cryogen-free MRI magnet for Johns Hopkins University, 2008.
- 3T preclinical cryogen-free MRI magnet for MR Solutions, 2012.
- 7T cryogen-free NMR magnet for Victoria University, 2013.
- 7T preclinical cryogen-free MRI magnet for Mediso, 2015.
- 9.4T preclinical Cryogen-free MRI magnet for Xingaoi Medical, 2019.
Under funding by US National Institutes of Health, SSI has been collaborating with research divisions of major Boston-area scientific institutions to demonstrate the viability and benefits of its cryogen-free magnet systems.
In Fall of 2015 SSI demonstrated a cryogen-free, 1.5T-72cm compact whole-body MRI scanner. In Spring of 2016, SSI delivered the first commercial unit of the cryogen-free 1.5T-72cm magnet to a medical device company in Germany. This magnet can operate in a slanted or horizontal orientation, and has seen active use for three years. Subsequent units of 1.5T-72cm have been installed in France and in India.
In summer of 2016 SSI demonstrated a cryogen-free, 1.5T-30cm extremity MRI magnet with an innovative 3-bore architecture that allows high level of patient comfort when scanning the patient’s knee. This magnet was installed at Massachusetts General Hospital for imaging experiments in the winter of 2017 and is still under active use. Beta designs of 3-bore magnets with even higher level of patient comfort are now offered to the market.
In May of 2019, Xingaoi Medical of China demonstrated a cryogen-free,1.5T-850mm whole-body MRI , first in the world, which was built under a licensing agreement and supervision by SSI. An MRI scanner that uses this magnet received CFDA approval in 2020.
In April of 2020, Synaptive Medical of Canada received US FDA approval for their Evry Head MRI Scanner. Evry uses a cryogen-free superconducting magnet by SSI.
SSI’s patented and patent pending superconducting magnet technology solutions make superconducting magnets less expensive to manufacture, install, and operate. They can truly be installed and operated where there is electricity, without any consideration related to liquid helium as there is none required.
Since 2018, larger MRI companies have been offering MRI magnets with small volumes (7-20 liters) of sealed liquid helium within their magnets. We have often been asked why they use/need liquid helium to operate their magnet. Since 2012, our cryogen-free (zero liquid helium) magnets have been operating in preclinical MRI labs, as well human diagnosis applications. So, the question of the need for a bit of liquid helium should be placed to those who need it. Often, they point out that their magnet stays at field for hours after the power goes out. Well, the question becomes why does one need the magnet on when the power is out and no other equipment works? In such occasion, our magnets simply discharge until the power is restored, and then recharge a few hours after power is on.
